The Nagura is a small but essential dressing stone for maintaining your whetstones and achieving optimal knife sharpness. On lower-grit stones (<1000), it creates a fine abrasive slurry that aids the sharpening process. On higher-grit stones, it cleans the surface and corrects minor hollows or imperfections.

Over time, a whetstone’s surface can become loaded with swarf (tiny steel particles) and spent abrasive, which may glaze the stone and reduce cutting efficiency. Dressing the stone with a Nagura removes swarf, refreshes the surface, and restores full cutting power.
